KMCHCON’s Skill Development Program

The KMCH College of Nursing’s Department of Child Health Nursing recently organized a Short Term Skill Development Programme on “NEONATAL RESUSCITATION” from September 21, 2023, to September 23, 2023. A total of 103 students, including those from the III year B.Sc (N) and I year P.BB.Sc (N), actively participated in this valuable course.

The program featured esteemed chief guests, Dr. Balakrishnan .R, Consultant Neonatologist at KMCH, and Dr. Ashwath.D, Consultant Pediatrician & Neonatologist also from KMCH, Coimbatore. The course was enriched with hands-on training sessions led by NRP trained experts from KMCH, including Anumandhan, NICU Incharge at KMCH, and Prof NB Mahalakshmi from KMCH College of Nursing.

The program commenced with a pretest at 8:30 AM and an official inauguration, highlighted by the lighting of the kuthuvilakku by distinguished dignitaries at 9:00 AM. Prof DR S Madhavi, the Principal of KMCH College of Nursing, presided over the event and spoke about the current scenario of neonatal mortality and the critical importance of early initiation of neonatal resuscitation.

Prof DR MalarvizhiG, Vice Principal & HOD of Child Health Nursing at KMCH College of Nursing, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the significance of essential nursing skills and the latest updates in Neonatal Resuscitation. Dr. Balakrishnan.R, Consultant Neonatologist at KMCH, took the role of chief guest on the first day, focusing on birth preparation and routine care.

The second day featured Dr. Ashwath.D, Consultant Pediatrician & Neonatologist at KMCH, who discussed the safe administration of CPAP and newborn care on ventilators. Prof BlessyPramila conducted a session on the initial steps of newborn care, while Prof Dr. Malarvizhi G addressed Evidence-based practice Guidelines and Nursing Care of Newborns on ventilators.

Hands-on training encompassed initial steps, observational care, brief ventilation, and prolonged ventilation with normal and slow heart rates, imparted by MR Anumandhan, Prof NB Mahalakshmi, Prof BlessyPramila, and MS Jancy Rani. The program concluded with an objective structured practical examination on the third day, ensuring participants acquired essential competencies in Neonatal Resuscitation.
