SPCA’s free anti-rabies vaccination camp

The Coimbatore SPCA organized a successful free anti-rabies vaccination camp for dogs and cats at the Government Veterinary Poly Clinic in Town Hall, commemorating World Rabies Day under the theme “All for 1, One Health for All.” By 1 pm, a total of 162 dogs and 17 cats received vaccinations at the event.

Throughout Coimbatore District, a total of 655 vaccinations were administered, including 611 for dogs and 44 for cats. The event was conducted with the presence of esteemed individuals such as Rtn. Aparna Sunku, Vice President of SPCA, Dr. Perumalsamy, Regional Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, the Secretary of SPCA, Dr. Shankar, Clinician, Govt Veterinary hospital, Assistant Director of Animal Husbandry, Treasurer, SPCA.

“This is a dangerous virus with no known cure. The annual mass-free anti-rabies vaccination camp is organized to raise awareness. Anti-rabies vaccination should be administered to pet animals on the 90th day, followed by a booster dose within the next 25 days. This practice is crucial for the well-being of both pets and people and should be followed. In case of a dog bite, it’s important to immediately wash the wound with water and disinfect it with a tincture. Seek medical attention within 30 minutes and receive Anti-Rabies Vaccination immunoglobulin (IG) around the affected area, following a vaccination schedule. This precaution applies not only to pet dogs but also to stray dogs,” Dr. Shankar emphasized.
