Sankara’s Milestone Center: Transforming Lives of Children with Autism

Sankara Eye Hospital has inaugurated the “Milestone – Early Intervention & Transformation Clinic,” a pioneering initiative for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This clinic, a first of its kind in the region, offers comprehensive Vision & Perceptual Therapy. It was made possible with support from the volunteer initiative “Surya For Life.”

Balasubramaniam, Chairman of Bannari Amman Group & Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust, inaugurated the clinic. “Every child is unique. The Milestone Early Intervention Centre, set up with support from Surya for Life, will ensure that therapy is tailored to each child with Autism. It has the capacity to adapt to the child’s evolving needs over time,” he said.

Dr. Ramani, Founder & Managing Trustee of Sankara Eye Foundation, India, shared, “We are grateful for the support from Surya in establishing Milestone. The center, with an investment of Rs 7.5 Lakhs, enables us to offer holistic and personalized care for children with autism. This involves a blend of computer-based therapy and exercises, utilizing specially designed equipment based on recent global research and in collaboration with colleagues from Sankara Eye Hospital.”

“Surya is a volunteer initiative that I founded in 2004. When witnessing the passion of the Sankara team and the inspirational leadership of founder Dr. Ramani, I felt compelled to continuously support their social activities. It’s time we view individuals with autism as ordinary human beings,” shared Poornima, Founder of Surya.

Surya, through the sale of terracotta jewelry, contributed significantly to this center for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism manifests in early childhood, affecting social interaction, communication, and behaviour. Estimates show a prevalence rate of 17 per 10,000 for autistic disorder worldwide.
