TNAU Price forecast for Red Chilli

The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore has developed market advisory for Red Chilli.

Indian chilli is considered to be World famous for two important commercial qualities viz., colour and pungency levels. It is the major spice crop occupying about 29 per cent of total area under spices cultivation accounting for nearly 8.52 lakh hectares with a production of 15.78 lakh tonnes of chilli during 2021-22. India exported 2.59 lakh tonnes of chillies in 2021-22 in the form of dried chillies, chilli powder, picked chillies and chilli oleoresin. Indian chilli is mainly exported to Asian countries like China, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

In Tamil Nadu, 0.24 lakh tonnes of chilli were produced from 0.54 lakh hectares during 2021-22. Chilli is mainly grown in Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts and sparsely grown in almost all other districts. Mundu and sannam are the major varieties grown in Tamil Nadu and sowing of chilli will be taken up mainly in October-November.

In case of Tamil Nadu, normal arrivals are expected to commence from February last week. When, the fresh arrivals from Tamil Nadu flows into the market the price will start decline.

In this situation, Price Forecasting Scheme has analyzed the past 16 years of red chilli prices that prevailed at Tirunelveli regulated market for sannam variety. The analysis and traders survey results showed that the farm gate price for sannam variety will rule around Rs. 180-200 per kg at the time of harvesting. Hence, the farmers are advised to take up selling decision accordingly.
