Beekeeping for Sustainable Development in Agriculture

Uplifting communities, one apiary at a time.

Creating awareness about bees, cultivation, and harnessing their gifts can benefit us in many ways. The Department of Zoology of Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore has been offering a Diploma in Apiculture program since 2018 to educate the public about beekeeping and its importance with the support of the college management. The programme is recognized by Bharathiar University and the college has produced 242 successful graduates. The institution has set up its beekeeping unit in Periyathottam, Vadavalli, where students learn more about the bees under the guidance of faculty members.

Consultation work done by the students at the Beekeeping field: Scientific input to improve the crop yield through beekeeping is most essential for quality agriculture. In the last five years (August 2018 to May 2023), to create awareness among farmers, women self-help groups, and others, outreach programs in rural areas were conducted periodically in association with Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Marathas Honey Bee Farm, Madhurum Honey & Bee Farm and Nectarial Farms.

Many farmers attended the programme and started beekeeping (30% of participants) and earned considerable revenue around Rs 20,000 per year. Further, they gained scientific knowledge in the management and practice of apiary units and also served as agents to transfer the technology to other farmers in their area to disseminate the knowledge on beekeeping. Programmes like hands-on training and exhibitions in rural areas were organized and a book on honey bee management compiled by the Department of Zoology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College was distributed among the farmers. Stakeholders were also taught how to manufacture honey bee boxes for their own benefit and also for commercial purposes. The importance of beekeeping, the role of honey bees in maintaining natural balance, and the management of apiary were published in both Tamil and English newspapers for the benefit of beekeeping aspirants.

Through the consultancy work in the Beekeeping sector, the students receive monetary benefits as well. Apart from this, some of the students have become entrepreneurs by setting up small beekeeping units in possible areas. One of our students received the beekeeping award from the MSME,New Delhi for his contribution to  the field of Beekeeping.
