Almonds Emerge as a Prediabetes-Fighting Superfood on World Diabetes Day

As World Diabetes Day on November 14, 2023, spotlights the global diabetes epidemic, India’s alarming status as the ‘Diabetes Capital’ comes to the forefront. This year’s focus centers on understanding the risk of Type 2 diabetes and ways to prevent or delay its onset. Almonds have emerged as a prediabetes-fighting superfood, backed by recent studies.

Consuming just 20g of almonds 30 minutes before meals has been shown to improve blood sugar levels in some individuals. In one study, 23.3% of prediabetes patients returned to normal blood sugar levels after adding almonds to their diet. Daily almond intake over 12 weeks resulted in improved insulin resistance, lower fasting glucose, weight loss, reduced BMI, and lower cholesterol.

Almonds, with their low glycemic index and nutrient-rich profile, including protein, fiber, healthy fats, and essential nutrients, make them an ideal snack for those with prediabetes. Alarmingly, an estimated 136 million Indians are on the cusp of developing diabetes, with nearly half remaining undiagnosed.

Experts emphasize the role of an active lifestyle and prudent dietary choices, like incorporating almonds, in managing prediabetes and promoting overall health. Renowned actress Pranitha Subhash begins her day with almonds, recognizing their satiating qualities and health benefits.
