‘STAR’ survey says high-fiber supplement increases weight loss

The ‘STAR’ survey, involving 3,042 people with type 2 diabetes and 152 doctors across India, reveals that daily consumption of a high-fiber dietary supplement significantly helps control blood glucose levels. Those who consumed the supplement for three months reported lower HbA1C, increased weight loss, and heightened feelings of satiety compared to those who did not. The survey underscores the potential of fiber-rich supplements in bridging the gap between recommended and actual fiber intake for diabetes management, as highlighted by organizations like RSSDI and the American Diabetes Association.

Dr. Sanjay Kalra, President of the South Asian Federation of Endocrine Societies (SAFES) and lead author of the survey, emphasizes that proper nutrition is crucial in diabetes management. Individuals with diabetes need to not only cut down on carbohydrates and sugars but also increase their fiber intake. Dietary fiber provides a sense of fullness, preventing overeating, and slows sugar absorption during digestion, reducing post-meal blood glucose levels. Often, people with diabetes fall short of the required fiber in their diet. This survey highlights how a fiber-rich nutritional supplement can fulfill their daily fiber needs.

Dr. Nitin Kapoor, Professor at the Dept of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, CMC Vellore, emphasizes that many T2DM patients overlook the importance of adequate fiber in their diet. The modern diet, if not well planned, often lacks sufficient fiber. For the average Indian adult with diabetes, the recommended daily fiber intake is 25-40 grams, crucial for reducing blood glucose levels and improving satiety. He advises patients to boost their fiber intake and consider supplements if needed. It’s not just about blood glucose control; it extends to benefits like weight management, preventing constipation, improved cholesterol levels, and maintaining a healthy gut.
