KASC’s Lecture Dives into CRISPR-Cas9 Technology

The PG & Research Department of Biotechnology, in collaboration with the Indian Science Congress Association, co-hosted a Guest Lecture on “CRISPR-Cas9 A Prelude.” The event witnessed the participation of O.N. Paramasivan FRCS, Treasurer, S. Paulsamy Dean R&D, A. U. Thangavelu, Assistant Professor & Head of the Department of Biotechnology, along with staff members and students from various departments of KASC (Kongunadu Arts and Science College).

The distinguished guest speaker, Kalpana Surendranath, Senior Lecturer in Molecular Biology and Microbiology and Leader of the Genome Engineering Lab at the University of Westminster, London Area, shared insights about CRISPR-Cas9 technology. The event commenced with a prayer song followed by the lighting of a traditional kuthuvilaku. Paramasivan felicitated the chief guest, and the proceedings continued with a warm welcome by S. Paulsamy. Paramasivan delivered the presidential address, setting the stage for Kalpana’s special lecture on CRISPR-Cas9.

Kalpana’s presentation explored the cutting-edge applications of genome editing technologies, specifically CRISPR-Cas9. She elucidated its fundamental principles, its role in understanding biological pathways, creating disease models, developing therapies, and its diverse applications across various domains. Discussions also covered its implications in human health, agriculture, animal breeding, and ongoing clinical trials. Kalpana highlighted the programs in her Genomic Engineering Laboratory, including internships, workshops, and a UG-PG-PhD pipeline.

Engaging interactions ensued as students sought clarifications and insights from Dr. Kalpana about CRISPR-Cas9 and her research journey. She expressed interest in conducting a workshop on CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology under her guidance in the upcoming year, acknowledging the well-equipped Biotechnology Department at KASC. The event saw the active participation of 150 students and concluded with a vote of thanks by A. U. Thangavelu, Head of the Department of Biotechnology.
