Covai kids learn about Lord Ganesha’s greatness via Sri Krishna Sweets’s “Kanmaniye Kadhai Kelu”

The impact of story telling can be a method to instill good values in children and Sri Krishna sweets has been organizing  story telling sessions from July. The third  story telling session was organized at Sindhu Sadan hall on September 1st, Sunday . More than 100 children participated .

The aim of these programs is to create knowledge and awareness about our traditions. Story Tellar Amudha Karthik during the session dealt with the various stories  on celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi. Amudha chose  songs as a medium to convey stories about Ganesha .She also spoke about the “Modak story “and the “Kutty and the mouse” stories which made the children listen with enthusiasm.

The history about how Ganesha was born, stories about his intelligence were told. Once when Lord Shiva was out, Goddess Parvathi went to take bath. Since no body was there to guard her, she created a form and brought it to life . As she gave life to the form it became her child.

Goddess Parvathi had given strict instructions that nobody should be given permission to enter and went to have bath. But Ganesha did not allow Lord Shiva to enter. This angered Lord Shiva who beheaded his head and went inside. Goddess Parvathi was saddened on hearing this. Shiva then fixed the head of an elephant as Ganesha’s head. This story was sung in the form of a song and the style enthralled the audience.

The song Pillayar, Pillayar perumai vayandha Pillayar that describes the places and the food that Lord Ganesha enjoys were sung.  Clay, turmeric , cowdung were some of the easily available natural materials with which the Ganesh idols were made which did not cause any harm to the environment. During the pooja, sugarcane, fruits, sugar, grains , coconut water, honey, poha , rice are given to God and these customary rituals were explained to the children.

Today several games played earlier have been long forgotten .The games that used to be played in the streets have been replaced by the smartphones. Today the streets where the children used to once play around remain deserted. Amudha Karthik made the children play a traditional game called ‘kola kolaya mundhirrikai “,a traditional game. The next session of the story telling session would be conducted on 6thOctober.
