Podanur Railway Station’s Redevelopment Takes Off

Podanur Railway Station, one of Tamil Nadu’s oldest, is set for a significant makeover as Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually launched the station’s redevelopment’s first phase. With a total budget of 24 crore, the initial phase is allocated 8 crore to address the long-standing demands of the local community. Dating back to 1862, the station’s overhaul has been eagerly anticipated.

This redevelopment falls under the larger scheme of modernizing 508 railway stations nationwide through the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with a substantial budget of over 24,470 crore. The planned improvements for Podanur Railway Station encompass various aspects, including enhanced aesthetics, improved circulation areas, wider vehicle lanes, dedicated pedestrian pathways, and upgraded entry and exit facilities.

The interiors are also in for a transformation, featuring upgraded waiting halls, toilets, and booking offices with LED lighting. Inclusivity is a key focus, with the addition of ramps with handrails for accessibility. Platform shelters will be expanded, existing ones repaired, and new platform fencing and LED signage installed.

The local community is set to benefit from improved amenities, including drinking water facilities, platform fans, and new shelters. Excitingly, plans to extend the Peelamedu station platform are also in progress. The redevelopment of Podanur Railway Station promises to enhance passenger experiences, making travel more seamless, comfortable, and accommodating for all.
