Rajini’s political entry, a comedy package for meme creators

Even DMDK Leader Vijayakanth had got some reputation among TN people but not Rajinikanth says the ‘Visaranai’ movie writer Auto Chandran

The year 2017 had been a year of surprises for the state of Tamil Nadu starting with the historic Jallikattu protest to the bizarre RK Nagar Elections alongside the end of 2G spectrum Scam, which was blown up by the media as India’s biggest scam.

Nevertheless, 2017 had the best of all saved for Super Star Rajinikanth, the 68-year old veteran actor from Tamil Cinema, who finally told his fans and public that he would be contesting  all 234 seats in Tamil Nadu’s Legislative Assembly Election  in 2021.

When asked about Rajini’s political entry, to M. Chandrakumar, a writer, popularly known as Auto Chandran, whose book ‘Lock-Up’ was made into a famous Tamil movie ‘Visarani’,  has told The Covai Mail that Rajini’s entry has already created a comedy package for the meme creators on the Internet.

“His political entry may entertain his fans but not the people of Tamil Nadu. This is purely a media gimmick,” says Auto Chandran, who rates DMDK Leader Vijayakanth a better leader compared to Rajini, who came much earlier when the political giants of the state like Karnunandihi and Jayalalitha were at their peak.

Although the DMDK leader lost his way in the political turmoil, Chandran claims that ‘”the political leaders would call it Emptiness of Leadership. But, I see it as Political Vacuum. With the release of 2.0 and Kaala movies, Rajini’s acting career would be over and, in order to maintain his stardom and minding his post retirement career, the veteran actor has announced this political game calling himself the ‘Savior of Tamil Nadu’,” says the writer sarcastically.

Chandran notes that the actor should have made this announcement long ago, when he had the age as well as the opportunity. “He went to the Himalayas seeking inner peace at that age and now when he is too old, when there are no opponents in the game, he beckons to his fans to be ready for a war,” laughs Chandran.

The writer raises question on Rajinikanth’s Spiritual Politics saying “if it’s about spirituality, then the actor should have raised his fingers showcasing Christian, Islamic and Sikh symbols. Are there no spiritual symbols or leaders in those faiths?” he asks.

‘Spiritual Politics is just another face of Hindutva, by which a national party is trying to enter the state wearing a mask. It will be just a day dream. People of Tamil Nadu will never accept such ideologies,” says Chandran.

With enormous changes happening in the internal structure of the spirituality beliefs across the globe, Chandran feels, “a true spiritual person will never ever think of coming to power. If he does so, or if a particular party puts forth such ideologies, then it means fake politics,” he says.

By taking into account the successful history of the Dravadian leaders like M.G.R, Karunanithi and Jayalalitha, Chandran states that it is the idol worship, blindly followed by their respective fans, without rational thought or analysis that has made the state a looting place.

“This should not continue. Only the members had to select their leader, by means of policies and knowledge. If their thoughtless and blind following continues with Rajini, voting for his charisma alone, his fans will ruin the state, unlike the other party members who were once fans for their respective leaders,” says a disappointed Chandran.
