Humble bananas to be costlier soon

It is only March and the temperature is already soaring and we can see people crowded in front of juice shops, and around ice apples and tender coconut vendors in the afternoon to escape the intense heat. There have also been wildfires in Nilgiris

So what is the reason for this soaring temperature? The answer is CLIMATE CHANGE.
Climate change not only affects humans and wildlife but it also hurts the humble bananas which are said to be beggars’ fruit. The prices of bananas are going to soar due to the rise in temperature. In Mumbai, a dozen bananas cost Rs.80 and in Bengaluru, it is Rs.100 when earlier it was around Rs.20 to 30.

Scientists say bananas need a certain temperature and humidity to grow in tropical regions but climate change has disrupted that causing a rise in temperature. This along with the unseasonal monsoons have led decline in banana yields. Another reason that affects banana production is pests, which make the banana plantation more vulnerable and tend to a reduction in harvest.

Climate change is affecting every aspect of life from the way of life we live to the food we eat. The need of the hour is to address climate change by doing simple things in our day-to-day lives.
