Caring for hearts during COVID-19 Crisis

– Dr.R.Suresh Kumar, Interventional Cardiologist, KMCH

During this pandemic period, some patients who arrive at our hospital with heart issue may have effects of COVID-19. For those patients with mild heart issues, we can take time, test for COVID-19 infection and treat the threat posed by novel coronavirus first (if they are affected) and then go for heart issues.

But for patients with serious heart complaints, we need to take immediate action because we know that every minute is valuable and we are at a stage where we cannot wait long for the reports to come.

We have provided our best care even during this pandemic. While some patients get relief from heart attack by application of medicine (Thrombolysis), some serious cases need angioplasty and Patients with critical impact of heart attack, for instance those patients who arrive late after the heart attack had occurred, will need to undergo even open-heart surgeries.

Our request to the public is that they should take measures to keep themselves safe from COVID-19 and at the same time, never be negligent of heart attack symptoms and consult the doctors in time.
