PSG Hospitals’ Milk Bank Surpasses Milestone with 90 Donor Mothers Supporting Preterm Infants

PSG Hospitals’ Kamadenu Human Milk Bank marks its one-year anniversary since its inauguration on August 4, 2022, during World Breastfeeding Week. Operating on a not-for-profit basis, the milk bank has been a vital source of Pasteurized Donor Human Milk (PDHM) for 104 in-hospital babies, with the incredible support of 90 donor mothers.

The concept of Human Milk Banking, aimed at providing the best alternative for newborns when Mother’s Own Milk is unavailable, has gained recognition globally and nationally. PDHM proves beneficial for preterm babies, low birth weight infants, and those susceptible to Necrotizing Enterocolitis by providing essential nutrients and immunity factors.

At the celebratory event, PSG Hospitals expressed gratitude to donors for their crucial role in the Milk Bank’s success, alongside recipient families who supported their efforts. PSG Hospitals also announced an exciting collaboration with Coimbatore North Ladies Circle 11 to expand their reach and impact through a joint project. An upcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will solidify this partnership and their commitment to social welfare.

Headed by Dr. Ramesh, the Milk Bank operates with a dedicated team, including Dr. Sumathi, Dr. Manjari, and staff nurse Kavitha. The process involves rigorous donor selection, consent, education, and safe milk handling before processing with a Pasteurizer and thorough testing for safety. The milk is then dispatched to eligible recipients as per pediatrician orders, while the families receive lactation support.

With aspirations to serve outside babies in the future, PSG Hospitals welcomes milk donations from both in-hospital and outside donors, earning them the recognition of a Comprehensive Lactation Management Centre (CLMC) in accordance with National guidelines.
