Rotary Aakruthi observes World Polio Day

Presents Diwali gifts to 50 differently abled people

Rotary Club of Coimbatore Aakruthi, which is an exclusive Women’s club, observed World Polio Day on Sunday and chose 50 differently abled women and kids, and provided them free Sweets, Dresses and Crackers to keep their spirits up during this festive season. Out of the 50 beneficiaries, 10 were polio-affected people.

The gifts were handed over by Rtn.Rajasekhar Srinivasan, the District Governor of Rotary International District 3201 in the presence of Club’s President Rtn.Kavitha Gopalakrishnan, Past President Rtn. AKS Leema Rose and other members of the Club.

Speaking to the media, Rtn.Rajasekhar said that October 24 is observed as World Polio Day,  as it is the birthday of  Jonas Salk who is known for developing the vaccine for polio.

He said Rotary has a great share in ending polio around the world, and only 2 countries today are encountering the threat of polio, which he said will soon be brought to an end with the support of Government and NGOs.

He applauded Rotary Club of Coimbatore Aakruthi for their philantropic activities in the recent challenging months, and he also congratualted Rtn.Leema Rose for sponsoring the wedding of a polio affected woman.

He also informed that Rotary Clubs of District 3201 have contributed Rs. 50 lakh today which will be donated to Rotary Foundation, and Rotary will end polio very soon.
