Dr.NGP IT Team impresses with ultra-compact personalized flying vehicle design

Nuts and Bolts, a team from Dr.NGP IT became a finalist at Smart India Hackthon 2020 with their incredible concept – FALCON BUG 0.2. The team comprise of Final year Mechanical Engineering students Daniel Arulanandh, Team-Lead, Nelson Jacob.T, Niveditha Noble, Sanjay Anandh.M, Sathishpandian.S and VishnuPrasanth.M.

They were mentored and guided by Dr.B.Shreeram, Autodesk Certified Instructor and professor at Dr.N.G.P IT. The problem statement -Design an Ultracompact Personalized Flying Vehicle, was given to them by Autodesk. The main objective of this project was to design a vehicle which has to serve the dual purpose of driving on road and also take a flight when needed in a personalized method.

The team was trained by its mentor during their summer holidays on Autocad and they were also trained in Fusion 360 products for the past two years. They have been trained and received Autodesk User certifications because Dr.NGP IT has an agreement with Autodesk. These were definitely a huge strength to the team. They said “Our knowledge on Fusion 360 was very useful in performing the dynamic analysis, flow simulation study of this vehicle and generative design”.

Overcoming challenges faced in their previous design, the team implemented certain changes in their Falcon Bug 0.2 and it solved their early troubles. “We had four hydraulic telescopic attachments on each tyres so that we could uplift the vehicle and give it the required ground clearance and two ducted fan propellers where used for take a flight purpose. To withstand the load of the entire vehicle, the help of light weight composite materials were used. Since we had to take care of the safety of the people travelling we used sensors and other safety measures to ensure the safety.”

Nuts and Bolts aims to give other a view of the futuristic concept. They say that the main advantage of this Falcon Bug 0.2 is that it gives personal mobility and independence through both air and land ways. And it is also eco-friendly due to the usage of lithium ion batteries for driving on road and bio-fuel for airways. This helps in the reduction in the emission of carbon content into the atmosphere and helps in conserving the nature.

The team said that they are indebted to their college’s Secretary, Dr.Thavamani  D.Palaniswami and Chairman Dr.Nalla G.Palaniswami for providing them the opportunity to shine in such a platform. Nuts and Bolts thanked their HoD Dr.Nandhakumar and Principal Dr.K.Porkumaran for their support and encouragement in this endeavor.
