GEM Hospital presents novel idea to Conquer Diabetes

GEM Hospital has launched a campaign called ‘Conquering Diabetes’ which is aiming for something that has not been tried in the recent history of healthcare; and that is to fuse Naturopathy- natural way of healing an ailment and Allopathy to bring a definitive solution to bring diabetes under control.

The campaign was announced on 14.11.2019 which was Children’s Day as well as World Diabetes Day. Talking about children, Dr.Praveen Raj presented an alarming report of a research study made in Coimbatore on nearly 10,000 children. It was found that 15% of them had the incidence of childhood overweight & 12.2% of those children are obese. He said obese children have the certainty to become obese adults.  He conveyed that in the year 2035, the number of people with diabetes is expected to skyrocket by 70%.

He conveyed that most of the patients’ blood sugar level fluctuates during the tests and keeping blood sugar at optimum level is crucial for a patient; as diabetes could trigger other lethal diseases like heart attack and stroke and even impact kidney, legs and eyes.

“But the kind of treatment that is suitable for one patient cannot be prescribed for others”, stressed Dr.Praveen Raj. He made it very clear that fat content in a person’s body and his metabolism rate play a strong role in getting healed from diabetes. Just by taking diet alone or by doing physical exercises or by taking tablets/insulin, diabetes cannot be cured. He emphasized that every patient’s cause of diabetes is different and the root cause of diabetes on an individual must be assessed for providing proper remedy through treatment.

Without ultimate dependence on medicines, diabetes could be brought under control; and to do that GEM Hospital is talking up this new treatment module where allopathy and naturopathy amalgamates. He said there will be experts from different domains  (physicians, dieticians, life style counselors, psychologists, diabetologists and bariatric surgeons) who will assess the patients with diabetes along with him and recommend what type of treatment, diet, exercise, lifestyle modification would suit this individual.

Dr.Praveen Raj mentioned that without ruffling feathers or egos the doctors and experts will work together to find a personalized treatment pattern for the patient; and that could not be achieved without the support of the patients. He said “patients mostly are seeking for instantaneous cure through medicines and tablets. They believe that a medicine would cure them. Well medicine just have a 50% role in managing diabetes, the rest rests in the patients’ hand”. In this new fusion module the dependence on tablets and medicines will be lowered to the maximum and the natural way of healing will be recommended, said Dr.Praveen Raj.

When diabetes continues to be refractory despite of proper management, metabolic surgery aimed at the manipulation of the intestine derived hormones may help in complete resolution of diabetes.

When questioned whether the public will accept such a novel concept, he said that this system may take some time, but it will surely change the perception that the cure to diabetes relies in medicine to believing that the cure rests in their hands.
