The State of Kashmir today

Since August 5, Kashmir has seen a lot of changes taking place and lives out there, although not life-threatening, remain disturbed in several accounts.

For the 22nd consecutive day, the market-places, business establishments remained closed and school are still closed, except for a few government run schools that get a meager amount of student-attendance. As far as private schools are concerned, they remain shut.

The restrictions placed in the valley have been lifted in many places but the security personnel are still in effective surveillance to maintain law & order. There is no untoward incident that has taken place in the region.

The communication restrictions placed in Kashmir have been eased. As of now, landline connections are re-established in some parts but internet connection including BSNL Broadband and private parties’ services remain shut. “No harm in communication blackout if it saves lives”, said J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik.

Public transportation is still lagging while private vehicle movement has seen a rise. Kashmir journalists have been struggling to report news from the ground as there are several restrictions placed on them.  India Today’s news correspondent Mausami Singh and other reporters who were covering the visit of Rahul Gandhi led delegation were manhandled by the defence personnel at the Srinagar Airport. The journalists have requested the Press Council of India to look into the matter at-least now, and not act like it is a body of the government.
