Why girls perform better in exams compared to boys?

On Monday, the 12th board exam results in Tamil Nadu and ICSE & ISC results were out. In both the results girls outperform boys. In the 12th, State Board Exam in TN, 96.44% girls and 92.37% boys have passed. In (ICSE) 10th, 99.65% girls and 99.31% boys have passed. In ISC 12th, 98.92% girls and 97.53% boys have passed.

All the news channels and newspaper headlines go like this ‘As usual girls outperform boys in the board exams.’ But why the pass percentage of girls is always high compared to boys, is there any reason behind this?

According to a recent study by a tutor at the University of Georgia named Chris Cornwall, it was found that boys tend to perform well in class tests and exams. However, when it comes to board exams, they tend to get more stressed and struggle to handle the exam pressure. On the other hand, girls can manage the stress and pressure and as a result, perform well in their exams and score high marks in the final result.

Other reasons the study reveals is that girls are more apt in planning, setting academic goals, and putting effort into achieving those goals. They are more attentive, persistent, organized, flexible, and eager to learn.

In many societies, there is a widespread belief that boys are naturally better at math and science than girls. This misconception often leads parents to encourage their daughters to excel in these subjects, which can ultimately result in better academic performance for girls. Additionally, cultural factors such as social support and positive reinforcement can contribute to girls’ success in these fields.

Despite all these factors and reasons, it is important to recognize that both boys and girls have the potential to excel not only in studies and exams but in all fields with the right support, guidance, and resources.
