Avoid short-cuts to evade obesity, consult doctors – Dr.Praveen Raj

The World Obesity Federation recognizes obesity as a “chronic, relapsing, progressive disease process, associated with comorbidities such as diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and infertility”. A recent study also linked morbid obesity to 13 types of cancer.

In Tamil Nadu alone, 43% of people are clinically overweight or obese and obesity among men has nearly doubled. Urbanization often leads to sedentary lifestyles with decreased levels of physical activity and higher consumption of sugary and fatty food – all of which can contribute to rising levels of obesity. Dr. Praveen Raj, Head of Bariatric Surgery at GEM Hospital says, “Not only our lifestyle, but even our diet and stress levels have changed. When combined, these factors play a vital role in contributing to the growth of obesity in Coimbatore.”

Praveen Raj stated, “…patients adopt short-cuts and unscientific measures before consultation. This is the primary barrier – often, well-intentioned family and friends provide guidance without full knowledge of the science behind obesity and its treatment. These treatments can do more harm than good. The best way to avoid such complications is to consult a medical expert as soon as you observe a steady and uncontrolled weight gain.”
