Pumpsets crucial for Agriculture, consider it as essential item – SIEMA pleads Home Minister

Vanathi Srinivasan takes SIEMA’s request to Home Minister’s notice

Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association (SIEMA )wrote a letter to Home Minister of India Amit Shah on Thursday stating that Pumpsets crucial for Agriculture, and it requested him to consider it as essential item and allow its supply chain to function on a  minimum level.

Vanathi Srinivasan, General Secretary, BJP-TN tweeted from her Twitter account and appealed the Home Minister to consider the request of SIEMA.

SIEMA said the Indian Pump Industry with a market size of Rs.15,000 crore is concentrated in the States of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. More than 80% of the pumps made are supplied for the farming and water supply sector which are two high priority sectors. SIEMA said it has 300+ pump manufacturers and fully supports the lockdown measures of the Center, at the sametime it mentioned that water supply operations are getting affected due to failure of pumps and the inability to replace or repair the pumps in this lockdown period.

Pumps are key component in agriculture machinery and majority of farmers depend on it for irrigation. Even a small disruption in irrigating the crop will lead to total crop loss, affecting farmers and country as well.  SIEMA requested Amit Shadh to permit functioning of the entire supply chain of pumpsets from manufacturing to distribution and service network at a reduced scale to ease the requirement and issue an addendum to referred GO by including Agricultural machinery as pumpsets.
