Siruthuli begins cleanup-drive in Vellakinar South Solai pond

Siruthuli is constantly working on restoration of water bodies in Coimbatore. As a continuation of its effort, the organization has started a cleanup-drive in the South Solai pond near the Vellakinar Government Hospital on Republic Day. The South Solai Pond is important for conserving the Groundwater level of Vellakinar area.  This pond is currently filled with garbage and waste. The waterways leading to the pond is not maintained. Also, the wastewater flowing into the pond is not being treated leading to the contamination of the pond.

Siruthuli along with the Vellakinar Neer Matrum Pasumai Pathugapu organization and the NSS students of SNS College started work to clean up the pond. The public belonging to that area also participated in cleaning the pond filled with plastic and other garbage.  More than hundred people participated in this cleanup.

Siruthuli has planned to remove the garbage and waste in the pond, treat the wastewater in a natural way and upgrade the waterway leading to the pond before the summer. The first phase of operations has begun. This will help the pond to be filled with fresh water thereby enabling the ground water level in the area to rise. Many species of birds will benefit from this effort and the pond will be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It is our duty to safeguard the water bodies in our area. It will ensure the well-being of our future generations. Members of the Siruthuli also participated in this cleanup drive.
