HICAS to broaden teachers’ way of handling children affected by drug abuse

The PG Department of Social Work of Hindusthan College of Arts and Science (HICAS) is organizing a three days program on Specialized Care for Children Affected by Drug Abuse for School Teachers and Counsellors. The program is sponsored by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.

It was inaugurated by Dr.S.Kowsalya, Registrar, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women- Coimbatore, in the presence of Dr.A.Ponnusamy, Principal, HICAS. Around 40 teachers, each from government schools across Coimbatore are attending this event.

It was conveyed that HICAS is undertaking this kind of program for almost three years. While this program for Govt school teachers is done in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India and teachers are brought to the college campus for participation, for teachers in the private stream, the program’s benefits are taken to the faculty directly by the college.

While talking at the inaugural, Dr.A.Ponnusamy, Principal, HICAS said that it has become difficult to handle students who are in their adolescent stage. 60% of the responsibilities lie with school teachers in shaping the students as well-manned individuals.

He said that period (adolescence) in the students’ life is a period of change- physically and mentally and they will have stress and anger abounding in their day to day life. Handling Peer pressure is another huge problem these days faced by students.

He stated that teachers today are unintentionally losing their grip on children and hesitate to correct a student’s character. He said they need to focus more on their behavior as they are not the same kind of students found in the 20th century. He said this current generation needs more care from teachers and parents.

The event will be a three day event and it will see eminent personalities addressing the teachers. The valedictory will be held on 29.11.2019
