A seminar about Reading Difficulties by Bharathiyar University

The International public seminar on ‘How to Assist the Students with Reading Difficulties?” was  jointly organized by the Department of Education, Bharathiar University  and Central Univerisity , Tiruvarur was held recently. The main aim of the seminar was to create awareness among parents, students and also to identify the problems with collaborative solutions.

Prof. Dr. G. Singaravelu. Head, Department of Education, Bharathiar University, Member Syndicate highlighted the unique features of this Parent Seminar, as the first of its kind in South India and it will usher in more collaborative ventures with the Central University of Tamil Nadu to enhance the quality of Education, he said. Prof. Dr. A. Ganapathi,Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University emphasized on the improvement of quality research in the campus. Dr. Seethalakshmi, Associate Professor, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore stressed upon the importance of reading skills for the overall development of students. She stated that teachers can change the trajectory for those at risk for failure in reading by intervening early and providing explicit, intensive, and extensive instruction. Prof. Dr. R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Former Vice Chancellor, MKU, Professor and Head, Dept. of Education, Central University of Tamil Nadu, emphasized on the cognitive aspects of improving reading skills. He added that Proficient reading and writing skills are critical to success. If students are not competent readers, they are at risk for academic, behavioral, social and emotional difficulties.
