Ramakrishna Hospital declares War against Cancer

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world and the second most common cause of life loss in India (next to cardiovascular diseases). Cancer doesn’t just affect the patient but his family and also causes a fall in the nation’s GDP. Combating cancer remains in the top priorities of the country and at a time like this, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital (part of the SNR Sons Charitable Trust) has declared War Against Cancer.

Towards that end, 3 measures have been taken by the Hospital which are: the Inauguration of Elekta Infinity Digital Linear Accelerator ( Advanced equipment to treat  Cancer) , Rotary-Ramakrishna Free Pediatric Oncology Ward and  GE-Ramakrishna Training Institute.

Talking about the Linear Accelerator,  D.Lakshminarayanaswamy, Joint-Managing Trustee, SNR Sons Charitable Trust said that the machine is the third to be added in their hospital. The machine is an advanced model in its segment, imported from UK and individually targets specific areas of radiation thereby avoiding radiation to vital organs, average treatment delivery time cycle time of 5 minutes against an average of 20 minutes in the IMRT Technology along with Volumetric 4D imaging which helps patient workflows delivering high precision targeted therapy at ultra-low doses.

He also mentioned that the hospital has partnered with Rotary Club of Coimbatore Smartcity  in bringing out the Rotary-Ramakrishna Free Pediatric Oncology Ward.  The partnership with Rotary is going to offer Rs. 70 lakhs worth of treatment (surgical and Radiation and Oncology Treatment) free. Dr.P.Guhan, Director, SRIOR stated that out of the 850 cancer affected children treated at SRIOR 78% of them have been saved from death’s grip and now are cured.

Dr.Guhan also mentioned that Sri Ramakrishna Hospital is the first hospital to bring Linear Accelerator to Coimbatore to effectively treat cancer. In fact the hospital is the first hospital in western Tamil Nadu to have 3 linear accelerators. The exposure time is lowered but the effect of treatment is high in this machine. The machine costs Rs.20 Crores but the hospital aspires to make the treatment through it cost-effective.

The final mission in this proposed war against cancer is the launch of GE-Ramakrishna Training Institute where nurses, bio medical engineers allied healthcare professionals and students will gain opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills to optimize clinical practice, patient care and equipment usage. Programs like American Association of Critical care Nursing (AACN), Diagnostic equipment Simulation work flows for interactive case discussions and maintenance for real time troubleshooting of Diagnostic equipment are just some of the short term training programs which we will offer with a GE and the Government of India certification thereby upgrading skills of healthcare professionals, improving employability and addressing the unmet demand of Human Resource in the hospital industry.

V.Ramakrishna, COO, SNR Sons Charitable Trust conveyed that on September 7, 2019 the inaugurations will be done by Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Health, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India.
