Your safety is your responsibility – Sumit Sharan IPS

Sri Ramakrishna  College of Arts and Science for Women (SRCW) joined hands with FICCI FLO in organizing a face to face interaction with Sumit Sharan, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City on 22.8.2019 at Velumaniammal Memorial Hall in the college premises. The focus of this event fell on Women Safety and Cyber Safety.

Poonam Bafna, Chairperson, FICCI FLO, Coimbatore Chapter, Swathy Rohit, Chief Business Officer, SNR Sons Charitable Trust and Dr.K.Chitra, Principal, SRCW participated in the program.

Latha, Inspector of Police, D1 Ramanathapuram L&O Police Station addressed the students.  She said social media today is misused and has become the tool of abuse. Cautioning the young minds about how a poor selfie can harm their future, she warned them of keeping their personal life within themselves and urged them to not share their pictures with anyone in the digital platform.

She assured them that complaints made by them will be kept discrete and encouraged them to report incidents without hesitations. She also requested them to report any abuses over children, if such a thing crosses their eyes. She also wanted them to limit their time in events/parties scheduled in the evening times. She suggested them to take a fresh drink in events instead of the ones given to them when new-faces or old ones offer. She also recommended them to share the details of the cab and driver while travelling in a hired cab at night times.

K.Malliga, Inspector of Police, Cyber-crime cell, Coimbatore city suggested the students to exercise caution while using social media. She urged them to customize their privacy setting and keep it at a level where their personal photos won’t be used to turn against them. She asked them to think twice before accepting a friend request from anyone in social media sites. Even while talking with known friends, she wanted them to avoid sharing personal life details. Narrating a case in which a girl got trapped by the very personal images she blindly shared, she mentioned “Who is your friend today may turn a fiend tomorrow”. She also advised them to not share their OTP related to social media accounts and emphasized them to maintain strong privacy settings.

Sumit Sharan IPS, in his address said 99% of problems could be prevented/solved if it is reported. Bullying doesn’t just happen in workplace, it could also happen at homes, cautioned the IPS officer.

“Your safety is paramount and you have to be responsible for that”, he said. Talking about security in the living areas especially in the apartments, he said so many people visit the houses excluding family members. Maids, sellers, delivery men etc will walk across the floor. If a cctv camera in parking, lifts and floors is set then it would prevent the possibility of a crime taking place, he recommended.

He advised the students that it is okay to be a social bird but urged them to keep in mind that security stands above everything socializing with friends has to offer. He asked them to learn to say ‘No’ to anything that makes them feel uncomfortable, and feel confident to report harassment. “The more you delay, the easier it is for the abusers to slip away from justice”, he said.
