Smart solution to handle Cbe’s Waste seeks govt support

With Coimbatore’s population nearing 20 lakhs and the waste generated by the city touching 1000 tonnes a day, an efficient method of managing the solid wastes in the city is required. Towards that end, G.Krithiha, Additional Director, Coimbatore Smart City Limited arranged a press meet in SIEMA Building on 17.8.2019.

She conveyed that the local government administration is doing an outstanding work in collecting and sorting the solid wastes of the city and the Central government’s Swachh Bharat scheme is also functioning well. But she tuned our attention to that everything is fantastic till it is brought to Vellalore Dumpyard but after that, the wastes remain there for a greater period of time, and every day the quantity  accumulates into mounds.

Pointing to this, she said the government needs to support in bringing an effective Waste to Energy Plant – a process of generating energy in the form of electricity or heat from the incineration of waste. The Covai Mail raised a question about the smokes that would emerge from the process, she said the proposed Waste to Energy plant would follow European standards and could be designed in a way that it benefits the society and doesn’t harm it.

She has brought experts in Solid Waste Management from China and other countries to inspect on how to provide solutions for Coimbatore’s requirement in managing solid wastes.
