Children learn about Organic Farming & Roof Gardening

Ferns Charitable Trust – a non-profit organization along with Eco Club of The NGP School hosted an awareness program on Organic Farming to school children on 2.8.2019 in The NGP School Campus.

The members of Ferns Charitable Trust and Eco Club members of The NGP School instructed the students about organic farming.  Students of the club numbering 30 participated along with their parents.

Dr.Thavamani D.Palaniswami, Vice-Chairperson, KMCH graced the occasion with her presence and said “when children learn about organic farming in the presence of their parents, they have the privilege to practice it well at home.”

The goal behind this event is to help create knowledge in children about the value of organic farming and home gardening. To achieve that end, Ferns Charitable Trust has come out with a concept of manure bags which has 80% coco peat, a mixture of cow dung and urine, organic compost, vermi -compost and nitrogen fixing bacteria.

This bag has zero pesticides and is tested by the members of Ferns Charitable Trust to see if it could give the expected results, and it has yielded good results.

Children were taught how to sow the seeds and use the manure properly by the members of Ferns Charitable Trust. Dr. Krishnan Swaminathan, Consultant Endocrinologist, KMCH and an apex member of Ferns Charitable Trust said “we are aiming to give back to the society and educate kids on organic farming and roof gardening. We the members of Ferns ourselves have sowed seeds using the mixture in hundreds of pots. We have received wonderful results especially with  Drumstick and Okra.  Kids get to know about organic farming at a very young age and why they should consume foods without pesticides. ”

Public, if they wish to obtain a bag of this mixture and how to use it in roof-gardens, can approach Ferns Charitable Trust via cell -94427 66696 and fernscbe@gmail.com.
