Glacier lose 9 trillions of ice globally!

Since the year 1961, the global melting of ice has been estimated to be around 9 trillion and this has led to an alarming rise of the global sea-water level to 27 millimeters. As per the sources obtained from the study made by the University of Zurich, it was reported last week that glaciers have been melting rapidly in the last 57 years.

Several Glaciological data and geodetic satellite data were used . Geodetic Satellite Data is used to measure the surface of Earth and it could provide data on the changes in Ice in glaciers easily. With the help of these, the changes that occurred in different periods were calculated and the results were terrible.

With the advanced development in technology and with several years of satellite data were used to trace how much glacier ice have lost annually. University of Zurich’s study has revealed that 335 Billion tons of ice was lost every year which has led to the increase in sea level up to one millimeter per year.

Even certain region in our own Himalayas, for instance Khumbu Icefall has been losing 30 meters of Ice every year. Certain glacier lakes that didn’t exist some 30 years ago in the maps have started to occur. Imja Tsho, the glacier lake in Himalaya is an example of this melting.

We are the cause of it and if we let this happen, worse forms of Climate change will be the result.
