Microscope images of Covid-19 causing virus captured in India

Scientists in Pune have captured through Transmission Electron Microscope, the images of ‘SARS-COV-2’ , the virus that causes Covid-19. The images were published in Indian Journal of Medical Research, reported Hindusthan Times.

The images were developed from the throat swab of the first laboratory confirmed Covid-19 case in India on Jan 30,2020. It belongs to a woman who was studying in Wuhan, China. She was diagnosed with Covid-19 after returning home.

According to Dr.Nirmal Ganguly, Former Director General, ICMR, “the images are critical to study mutations in clinical samples, and help identify the genetic origin and evolution of the virus, which will help in understanding how the virus moved fron animals to infect humans, how the people-to-people transmission started, and whether it is still mutating, which will inform the development drugs and and vaccines”
