CWMA convenes on June 25, TN farmers hope a positive outcome

Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) convenes again on 25th of June due to the fact that the state of Karnataka had not released the 9.19 TMC of water it should have released to Tamil Nadu on June, as ordered by the CWMA.

During the 3rd Meeting of  CWMA which was held in CWC-HQ, New Delhi, on 28.05.2019 under the chairmanship of S.Masood Husain, Chairman, CWMA & CWC. S.K.Prabhakar, Secretary, PWD, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, the representative of Tamil Nadu made it a request that the Karnataka government should release 9.19 TMC water  on June. The CWMA accepted the request placed by the TN Govt and ordered the release of water.

But till now, Karnataka has not released water which has created serious issues among farmers in Delta region who are awaiting water. In order to find a solution for the issue that has been ongoing, under the chairmanship of S.Masood Husain, CWMA will convene  again on June 25th to explore and expedite all possible solutions.

Meanwhile farmers associated with Tamil Nadu Cauvery Vivasayigal Sangam, have went on a rally asking for the Tamil Nadu Govt to build a dam at Rasimanal. The rally started on 10.6.2019 (Monday)  from Pompuhar. Eminent religious leaders gave bricks during the rally which symbolically conveyed that a dam would be constructed. The rally was led by P. R. Pandian, Gen.Secretary , Tamil Nadu Cauvery Vivasayigal Sangam.  This movement by the farmers’ association could act as catalyst or turn into a chaos if the governments don’t intervene because we (TN) have opposed Mekadtu dam proposed by Karnataka govt and if we propose to build one, it would raise severe opposition.

June 25 will be a very important day for both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The latter should respect the order by CWMA and release water.
