Oor Kuttai is now rejuvenated

Oor Kuttai, Kuppanur village, is situated in Madampatty Panchayath, Thondamuthur Block. It has been used as a garbage dumping site and for open defecation by the locals. Sewage from the nearby areas also flew into this pond. But not anymore.

After a round of discussion, the locals expressed their desire to rejuvenate the pond. Siruthuli received the necessary permissions from the Collectorate to work on this waterbody. M/s. Bosch volunteered to sponsor the project to desilting the pond and make it beneficial.

The inaugural pooja at Oor Kuttai was held on 5th January 2022. Thorny shrubs and bushes in the pond had to be cleared completely using heavy machinery. The excavated earth was used to form and strengthen the bunds. Cement pipes were laid at the 3 inlet channels to facilitate better inflow of water into the pond.

The storage capacity of the water body has now increased significantly and the total volume of the pond after desilting is 12756 cu.m.

A handing over ceremony was conducted on 3rd June 2022 in the presence of executives from Bosch, Mr. Muthuraj – Panchayat President – Madhampatty, Smt. Kavitha – Union Councillor – Madhampatty, Mr. RSK Krishnaswamy – Convenor – Water Bodies Rejuvenation Committee of Siruthuli, representatives from the local community and staff of Siruthuli. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. A Shafi, Department Head – Bosch Global Software Technologies Private Limited, Coimbatore. The Chief Guest emphasized the responsibility of the locals to maintain the pond henceforth and also highlighted that utmost care must be taken to prevent sewage inflow into the pond.

The water stored in this pond will help in recharging the groundwater levels in the region thereby enhancing the agricultural operations and also improving the living conditions of the people.
