Actor Rajinikanth is set to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award which is considered India’s highest award in cinema.
The announcement became a sensational news on Thursday morning when Union Minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted “Happy to announce Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in history of Indian cinema Rajnikant ji. His contribution as actor, producer and screenwriter has been iconic”
Soon after the tweet, congratulations started pouring for Rajinikanth from all sides. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu shared his congratulatory message on Twitter and said that he telephoned the Superstar over the phone and offered his best wishes. He wished him to bag more awards and live long.
What is this award?
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the nation’s highest award in cinema, presented to the chosen actor for his/her outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. The Directorate of Film Festivals under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting presents the award at the National Film Awards ceremony.
This award is presented by the Government of India to commemorate Dadasaheb Phalke’s contribution to Indian cinema who is popularly known as the father of Indian cinema; an Indian filmmaker who directed India’s first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra.
The award comprises a Golden Lotus medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs.1,000,000. It was last won by Bollywood’s Amitab Bachan.
