PSG Hospitals sensitize public about heart health

In order to sensitize the public, particularly the heart patients and their relatives, about the ways to keep their hearts safe, PSG Hospitals arranged an awareness program on September 29th, which is the World Heart Day.

The Cardiologists of PSG Hospitals along with Director of PSG Super Speciality Hospital Dr.J.S.Bhuvaneswaran met the patients at the Cardiology ward and spoke briefly on various themes regarding heart health and heart disease prevention.

Why is this awareness needed?

Dr.J.S.Bhuvaneswaran said “Understanding that the burden of heart diseases is huge across the world,  the World Health Organization announced in 1999 that September 29th will be observed as World Heart Day across the globe with the intent to reduce the intensity of heart disease among the public, educate them about the risk factors and ways to control them, and create general awareness about heart-health”. He urged everyone in attendance to Use their heart’s will-power to beat heart diseases.

Dr.G.Rajendiran conveyed the importance of SMS – Stress Reduction, keeping our Metabolic Parameters (body weight, blood sugar and BP) under check and quitting Smoking habit.

He highlighted the value of following Whole plant based diet, fresh fruits, vegetables and the benefits of reducing the consumption of polished white rice and meat consumption.

Prevent the recurrence

Dr. K.Tamil Arasu shared the theme of this year’s World Heart Day and he said that heart patients should take preventive measures to eliminate the chances of a second attack. He said that by following an active lifestyle, heart disease risks could be avoided.

Children with heart disease need quick care

Dr. Vinoth Doraiswamy said that 8 among 1000 new-borns have heart related ailments and 25% of them need immediate medical aid. He conveyed to the public about the symptoms a baby with heart disease would show.  He stressed that giving care on time to such infants is crucial. 

Listen to your heart beat

Dr.Vidyakar briefed that if there is any irregularities in our heartbeat it must not be avoided or taken lightly. He said that if it either beats below the normal minimum beating limit (60 beats per minute) or exceeds the maximum beating limit (100 beats per minute) it should be consulted with specialist and there are treatments for it.

Be also aware of these symptoms!

Dr. Prem Krishna said that heart attack won’t appear for all as an intense chest pain. It varies for people like physical tiredness, gas trouble, frequent belching and food indigestion, excessive sweating without any reason, burning sensation on Jaw and throat region while walking chest pain radiating to right arm and sudden onset breathing difficulties. He cautioned the people to seek medical help when such symptoms occur. He said that if people who faced heart attacks shared their symptoms with families and friend, it would make a big difference.

You are your healer

Dr.P.Arun Kaushik said that the commonest question all heart-patients ask is that whether they would face a second-attack after treatment. He stressed that medicines and consultations are 30% of the cure, and the remaining 70% is in the patient’s hands. They must take proper precautions like taking nutritious food, having proper sleep and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The way to healthy recovery begins from the time you start taking preventive steps leave hospital, and not just by taking medicines.

Dr. Ramasamy shared a very positive information that due to this lockdown, there has been a great shift in food consumption preferences. He highlighted that home cooked foods, limited working hours, intake of vegetables all have added to the reduction in heart disease risks among public.
