Kumaran Medical Center saves baby affected by intracranial bleeding

A 50 days old baby was brought to Kumaran Medical Center (KMC) in Kurumbampalayam recently with severe fever and seizure. The doctors examined and found the head was pale and bulged. Suspecting that there could be internal bleeding, Ultrasound scan was made and it was confirmed.

Upon doing CT Scan, the doctors found the left side of the child’s brain area was hemorrhaging, pressure had been built up and blood flow to the brain was affected much. An emergency operation had to be made without any delay, and it was done by a team of doctors that includes Dr.Shanthanam, Neurosurgeon, KMC .

Speaking to the press, Dr.Shanthanam said “We have done De-compressive Craniectomy for the baby. It is a high-risk surgery when done for a 50 days old baby. Anesthetist’s role in this surgery was very big. Taking all the precautions, the surgery was done. We have positive outcomes post the procedure. Seeing the MRI scan, we found that the size of swelling in the brain has been significantly reduced and the brain-activity have improved.”

Dr.Valliappan, Pediatrician said that the surgery was done 7 to 8 days ago and the child is showing is good movement, taking breast-milk directly, and has good improvement. The prognosis of the child will be made known in 1 or 2 months. It will be discharged in another 1or 2 days.
