In order to assist the Tamil Nadu Government in its battle against Novel Coronavirus, the Innovation Cell of Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science (SRCAS) has invented a new type of face shield with a unique design.

Prasana Kumar, M.Sc Electronics student at SRCAS and Arenius Karunakaran, Student at IIT Guwahati collaborated and came up with this new face shield. It was developed at SRCAS’ Innovation Cell.

This face shield could be worn by the frontline workers such as Sanitation Workers, Nurses, Administration officers, Corporation Staff, Police officers who have dedicated themselves to fight COVID-19. The inventors have said that it could be worn even by surgeons.

The components that goes into the manufacturing of this new face shield includes an OHP sheet of A4 size, commonly used transparent eye-glasses and 2 buttons. It takes just Rs.35 to make this protective equipment, and it could be produced in large quantities.

This face shield offers protection from the forehead to the lower jaw and ears. The inventors say that it would not restrict ease of movement of the wearers at any time. Currently around 100 masks are being made at the Innovation Cell of SRCAS.

The inventors handed over the first batch of these protective gear to Dr.P.Sukumaran, Dean and Director of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital and C.V.Ramkumar, CEO, SNR Sons Charitable Trust. The face shields have been provided to the staff of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital at free of cost.

It was conveyed that the Innovation Cell is in plans to scale-up the production of this face shield and provide it to the needed personnel in the coming days.
