TNAU Price Forecast for Coconut and Copra

The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore has developed market advisory for coconut and copra. India is the largest coconut-producing country in the world and accounted for about 31 per cent of the world’s total production during 2021-22 with a production of 19,247 million nuts. India’s coconut production is mainly concentrated in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh States accounting for 89 percent of area and 91 percent of production in the country.

Tamil Nadu state produced 35.07 lakh tonnes of coconuts from the area of 4.44 lakh hectares in 2021-22. The major coconut growing districts are Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Thanjavur, Dindigul and Kanyakumari. According to the trade source, arrivals from various districts of Tamil Nadu have already started and good monsoon had boosted the production of nuts. At present, arrivals of copra to Perundurai market are from Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Pollachi, Palladam, Tiruppur, Salem Kangayam and Mysore.

The price forecasting team has analyzed the past 15 years prices for coconut and copra that prevailed at Avalpoonthurai Regulated Market of Erode district and Perundurai Cooperative Marketing Society. As per the results of the analysis, the farm gate price of good quality coconut during May-June, 2023 will be Rs. 12-14 per nut. Price of good quality copra will rule around Rs. 75-80 per kg. The price may subject to change based on the arrivals from other states. Hence, farmers are advised to take selling decision accordingly.
