TNAU Price Forecast for Vegetables

The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme being operated in the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore has developed a market advisory for vegetables. Tamil Nadu is the major producer and consumer of tomato, brinjal and bhendi.

According to the Third Advance Estimate of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare (2021-22), the area under tomato cultivation is 0.54 lakh hectares with production of 16.18 lakh tons in Tamilnadu, the area under brinjal is 0.24 lakh hectares with a production of 3.13 lakh tons in Tamilnadu. Bhendi area under cultivation in Tamilnadu is 0.25 lakh hectares with production of 2.41 lakh tons.

The Price Forecasting Scheme team has analyzed the past 12 years prices of tomato, brinjal and bhendi that prevailed in Oddanchathiram and Coimbatore Uzhavar shandies. As per the results of the analysis, the farm gate price of good quality tomato during harvest (May’2023) would be around Rs.24-27 per kg. Farm gate prices of good quality brinjal will rule around Rs. 22-24 per kg and bhendi will rule around Rs. 26-28per kg respectively and the price may go up due to summer season. Hence, farmers are advised to take appropriate marketing decision accordingly.
