Increase in organ donation awareness a must to meet demands! – KMCH

Kovai Medical Center & Hospital (KMCH) conveyed that donated organs from just 2 deceased donors at their hospitals this year has been able to benefit 13 people in 2021.

Doctors at the hospital conveyed that despite a sizeable increase in willingness to donate organs could be seen in our society, the demand continues to overshadow the need and supply.

Only through increased public awareness about organ donation can the rising demands be met.

Observing World Organ Donation Day 2021, the hospital felicitated12 family members of organ donors who donated their vital organs in KMCH.

A special felicitation program “Life After Life ” was organized by KMCH, and Dr.G.S.Sameeran, District collector, Coimbatore and Dr.A.Nirmala, Dean, CMCH participated as the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honor respectively and honored the family members of the donors with mementos.

“This whole program of felicitating donors’ family felt holy” Dr.Sameeran expressed.

He said it is not the presence of guests but donors’ family members which has made this moment great.

Appreciating KMCH’s service in the area of organ transplantation (3000+ kidney transplantation, 115+ liver transplantation and 15+ heart transplantation) the Collector said KMCH will, no doubt, be in the global medical map in the years to come.

Dr.Arun N.Palaswami, Executive Director appreciated the brave decision of the donors’ family to donate the organs.

“Our life is not easy…bad things happen, we cannot control it but we can do something to others even if it is dark for us. We can bring hope to others”, Dr.Arun said.

Seetharaman, Head, Community Medicine, KMCH conveyed that they had made an ICMR sponsored STS project in which 633 students in Coimbatore were asked several questions about organ donation

It was found that 42% of them want to be organ donors but only 9% know where to give their organs whereas 60% have no idea how to donate.

This shows that government and private organisations definitely need to increase public’s awareness about organ donation.
