Human trials of COVID-19 vaccine begins in Chennai – Report

A private hospital in Chennai has reportedly commenced the human trials of Covaxin on Tuesday. Covaxin is a COVID-19 vaccine developed in India after the hospital received approval from ICMR.

This vaccine has received DCGI approval for Phase I & II Human Clinical Trials. It is developed by Hyderabad based biotechnology company Bharat Biotech International. The hospital in Kattankulathur has commenced human-trials, according to sources. Volunteers who have received the vaccine while receive the second dosage after 14 days.

This vaccine is developed in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – National Institute of Virology (NIV). The indigenous, inactivated vaccine is developed and manufactured in Bharat Biotech’s BSL-3 (Bio-Safety Level 3) high containment facility.
