L&T enhances learning environment 12 Cbe schools

Larsen & Toubro, India’s leading Engineering, Technology and Construction conglomerate, has helped create better infrastructure at 12 Government schools in Coimbatore.

At a function held at the Government Higher Secondary School, Asokapuram, Thiru K Rajamani, I.A.S., District Collector, Coimbatore, formally handed over the infrastructure facilities created by L&T, to the Tamil Nadu State Education Department, in the presence of Member of Legislative Assembly V.C Arukutty, R Murugan, Chief Education Officer, Coimbatore, other Education Dept. officials, Headmasters of Govt. Schools, Members of School Management Committee, PTA and officials of L&T.

Under this initiative, L&T has created sanitation facilities such as newly constructed washrooms, hand wash arrangements and provision for potable drinking water at 8 Govt. Schools, (Asokapuram, Vellalore, Pichanur, Chettipalayam, Arivolinagar, Kumittipathi, Kurumbapalayam & Anaikatti)  setting up Mini-Science Centres at 4 schools (Malumichampatti, Pichanur, Vellalore & Anaikatti) constructed a compound wall at one school, renovated classrooms in 4 schools (Asokapuram,Vellalapalayam, Myleripalayam & Anaikatti), renovated the Science Lab in a Tribal Residential School at Anaikatti.

Dignitaries at the function also witnessed the planting of 500 saplings at GHSS, Asokapuram Campus by students, as a part of afforestation measure, adopting Miyawaki method.  This is first of its kind initiative at a Govt. school in Coimbatore.

L&T has also entered into an Agreement with the Tamil Nadu State Education Department to establish Water & Sanitation Facilities in 4 more Govt. Schools in Coimbatore, during the current financial year.

School Adoption Project (SAP) to facilitate holistic development of Govt. schools in Coimbatore, is a key initiative under the aegis of L&T’s CSR efforts, since 2014. 12 Govt. schools in Coimbatore have so far benefitted through this programme.  The key objective of L&T’s School Adoption Project is to complement the efforts of the State Education Department, in the form of strengthening primary and secondary facilities at Govt. schools. These include setting up classrooms, Smart Class, laboratories, washrooms, hand wash, compound wall, sports facilities etc. inducing behavioral change among children through communication, conducting special education programmes to improve the quality of education and ensuring child rights as per UNCRC.  Special education programmes include imparting science, math and linguistic skills, providing career guidance, life skill education, health & hygiene awareness programs, strengthening of PTAs, etc. These changes have not only benefitted children studying at these schools but have also enhanced the attendance levels at Coimbatore Government Schools.

Since 2014, L&T has also been implementing the WATSAN (Water & Sanitation) Project in Govt. run schools. This project undertakes construction/refurbishment of washrooms, hand wash facilities, water sumps, installation of water purifiers as well as provision of dustbins with stands and the conduction of health education programmes. So far, 21 Government schools in Coimbatore have been covered under L&T’s WATSAN project.
