15 Dead, 43 Lakh people affected in Assam Floods

The flooding in Assam that began in the end of June has now claimed 15 lives and badly affected the lives of 43 lakh people living in the state.Out of the 33 districts in the state of Assam, 30 have been submerged in water and the normalcy of  life of 42.87 lakh people has been impacted. Many are in camps as the floods have destroyed houses and the public infrastructure badly.

According to Assam State Disaster Report, the rivers Brahmaputra, Dihing, Subansiri, Dhansiri, Jia Bharali, Kopili, Puthimari, Beki, Barak, Katakhal, Kushiyara and Sankosh are flowing above the danger level.

Nearly 4,157 villages have been affected by the floods and 1.5 lakh hectare of farming land is underwater. Roads, Bridge, embankement and public/private infrastructure are impacted.  26 schools and 12 anganwadis are affected.  Electric poles, lines and transformers have been damaged and the impact is not just on the humans but on the fauna and flora as well. Animals in Zoo and Sanctuary are affected. 71 houses have been fully destroyed while 97 building have been partially destroyed.

As per recent Assam State Disaster Report, 12.4 lakh big animals, 6.3 lakh small animal and 1543026 lakh poultry have been affected.  Chief Minister of Sarbananda Sonowal has informed the measures taken by the Assam Govt and PM Modi has assured that relief from the center will be made.

380 boats have been deployed and 15,583 people have been evacuated from the affected areas. Rice,dal, salt, oil, candle, mach-box, mosquito coil and net, tarpaulin, baby-food and biscuits have been provided to the people.

National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force are working hard to save the people. So far494 relief camps have been opened and 83,180 inmates are in these camps.
