Land acquisition for airport expansion: Airport Authority hopes to complete acquisition by 2022 end

Director of Coimbatore International Airport conveyed that he hopes that the Land acquisition for airport expansion may be over by the end of this year and the expansion work could also start following that.

Senthil Valavan, the Director shared this while addressing the members of the Airport Advisory Committee at a meeting held on Wednesday.

A range of topics related to the development of the airport were discussed during the meeting.

It was held under the chairmanship of Coimbatore MP P.R. Natarajan. This meeting takes place once in 6 months, to discuss on how to enhance various service offered by the Airport, improve passenger facilities and also receive suggestions from the committee members related to other services connected with the airport.

“Right from 2010, for the expansion of airport, land is being notified and acquired; it is a long and pending issue, and a tough process. Revenue Authorities are working hard and we are hoping to get it completed within 2022 and start expansion work”, said Senthil Valavan.

Expansion of bus connectivity to airport, improvement of service roads on approach to the airport, streamlining of SITRA Road Junction, taking action on the dumping of construction debris near airport sides were among the important things discussed at the event.

The airport director conveyed that resurfacing of the runway, expansion of turnpad, construction of new domestic departure terminal building are among the upcoming projects.

The Chairman of this meeting and Member of Parliament, Coimbatore PR Natarajan asked the director to appoint a person to provide reports on the actions taken on decisions made during the previously held Advisory Committee Meetings, and provide updates.

Leela Alex, District Revenue Officer, Rajgopal Sunkara, Commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation, PRG Arun Kumar, MLA, Kavundampalayam Constituency, representatives of various airlines, members of the industry associations, hoteliers association, travel and taxi associations were present.
