The Tamil Nadu Government has appealed to the Supreme Court of India that the Aadhar numbers of Facebook users should be linked with their respective accounts.
Facebook has acknowledged the suggestion raised by TN Govt and also similar suggestions/demands raised in Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh. The social media giant has requested to transfer all the cases in different high courts to Supreme Court as the observations given by different high courts remain conflicting. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear FB’s plea for transfer of cases.
Tamil Nadu government has stated that the Facebook profiles of users need to be linked with Aadhar numbers to check for circulation of: fake news, derogatory contents, adult and sexual contents, anti-social messages and terrorist-notions.
Facebook has said that this suggestion of linking aadhar number is not possible to be taken up as it will clash with the privacy policy. The Supreme Court has issued notice to Facebook and other social media platforms to respond before September 13.
