Intl Workshop at PSG Hospitals

Focuses on Multi-Disciplinary Management of IBS

The Department of Dietetics, PSG Hospitals organized a one day “International Workshop on Multidisciplinary Management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)” on 9.8.2019 in the hospital’s Seminar Hall.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr.J.S.Bhuvaneswaran, Director, PSG Super Specialty Hospitals . Vidhya Bhat, Accredited Practicing Dietician, Singapore and Associate Professor, University of Buffalo,NY, USA was the Chief Guest. She elaborated on FODMAP Diet – An overview Dietetic Assessment of patients with IBS.

Dr.S.Kowsalya, Registrar, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Dr.Radha Sai, Professor and HOD, Dept of Nutrition and Dietetics, PSG CAS, Dr. Ramanathan, Principal, PSG College of Pharmacy, Dr.L.Venkatakrishnan, Professor & HoD, Dept of Gastroenterology, Dr.Anand, Prof, Dept of Psychiatry & V.Kavitha, Chief Dietitian, PSG IMS& R Hospitals were the other resource persons.

Dr. J.S.Bhuvanesawaran in his inaugural address congratulated the organizers for conducting an International Workshop on an important Topic. He emphasized how food plays a vital role in our health. He said that what we eat has an impact on our thinking, body and life itself. He said our culture has perfectly given us the right foods to eat. He stated that IBS is connected with mind . Talking about its cure, he mentioned that the cure remains in food and at present there is no exclusive or significant cure to IBS and it needs multi-disciplinary approach and interaction to get a clearer idea of effectively treating it. He again stressed that improper food intake is the root cause of all diseases.

In the workshop, Medical Management of IBS, Role of food in wellness & illness of bowel syndrome, Understanding Gut Microbiome and drug-food interaction in the contribution of IBS,Psychologocal Assessment of IBS, Role of Prebiotics and Probiotics in IBS were discussed.  Doctors, Practicing Clinical dieticians, Freelance deititians, Nutrition and Dietic Students from all over Tamil Nadu and India participated.
