Solving problems of environment needs public commitment

– Padma Shri. Subash Palekar, Indian farmer at PSG CAS

The concentration of carbon dioxide has increased phenomenally in the last 100 years and much of this is due to industrial emissions. The level of CO2 needed for photosynthesis was ideal 200 years ago but the current level we face is not just harmful to plants and animals but to every organism on earth.

Award-winning scientist and the founder of a unique Natural Farming method Padma Shri. Subash Palekar expressed these thoughts at the ICSSR sponsored Webinar on Human Behavior & Environmental Sustainability, organized by the Department of Psychology (Aided) of PSG CAS.

He said in the last 100 years, sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane along CO2 have increased at alarming rates, and they have affected the land and air quality. He added that together these have triggered global warming and climate changes, and we should not see them as the problem of the government but see it as a public commitment to address these problems and provide solutions.

He also shared the downsides of chemical farming and even went on to explain how Organic Farming can affect the climate and give out greenhouse gases’ emissions. It was shocking to note that the organic farming method too has many downsides.

Subash then highlighted his technique called Subash Palekar Natural Farming. He said this method does not use substance composts. It is a unique chemical-free method that involves agroecology. It uses biological pesticides, and other innovative natural methods to enrich the soil, thereby cutting the costs needed for investments.

He said the innate immunity of humans has decreased substantially due to the consumption of products that are obtained using chemical fertilizers and pesticides. He proposed the practice of ZBNF for a healthy life and safe environment.

Principal of PSG CAS D.Brindha, who is also the Chairperson for this Webinar said more than 30 themes will be covered in this 2-day workshop that will feature eminent speakers of diverse fields.

She expressed that this webinar will provide tremendous exposure to students about the impact we make on the environment and how nature hits back. She stressed that sustainable measures should be introduced to reduce the negative impacts of carbon emission, burning of fossil fuels, soil erosion and various pollution. “Aligning to the Sustainable Development Goals, we should think how we can control the hazards the happen to the environment”, she underlined.

Prof.KP Naachimuthu is the webinar convener, and with the entire organizing team and guest speakers, this event aims to highlight how humans can actually undo the damage done to nature, and also how through innovative methods, we can flourish together with this wonderful environment.
