KMCH performs first renal transplant procedure post COVID-19

KMCH, the leading center for multi-organ transplants, has successfully carried out a kidney transplant procedure for a patient which is the first ever since lockdown. The procedure was done while adhering the new guidelines that was issued by Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) during COVID-19 lockdown.

Multi Organ Transplant Surgeons and team at KMCH harvested Kidney, Eyes, Skin and Bone from the body of the deceased in accordance with the regulations prescribed by TRANSTAN. The harvested organs i.e. One Kidney was transplanted at KMCH, Eyes, Skin and Bone were sent to a private hospital in Coimbatore.

As per the mandate of TRANSTAN, KMCH has separate passageways for doctors and other hospital staff. The hospital also has separate wards, theatres and ICUs for transplant surgeries. The hospital has a dedicated team of surgeons, consultants, nurses and other paramedical and medical specialists for handling transplant patients.

The entire medical team also undergoes periodical checks as per the guidelines of Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR). KMCH said that it makes sure that the operation theatres, ICUs, and equipment used for surgeries are duly disinfected periodically.

Congratulating the transplant team, Dr. Nalla G Palaniswami, Chairman, KMCH, mentioned that the hospital is setting example by strictly adhering to the government’s guidelines. He also thanked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and the Health Minister Dr.C.Vijayabaskar,  TRANSTAN Member Secretary Dr.R.Kanthimathy for having granted the permission to conduct organ transplant procedures.
