Discussion Climate Resilient Varieties, Technologies & Practices
The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) participated in the farmers Scientists interface meet on Climatic Resilient Varieties, Technologies & Practices which was held online on 28.09.2021 organized by the Indian Council Agriculture Research, New Delhi on the occasion of Annual Conference of Vice-Chancellors of Agricultural Universities.
As part of the program A. S. Krishnamoorthy, Registrar, TNAU, Coimbatore presided over the function and in his presidential address, spoke on climate change and its challenges in agriculture and food security.
He indicated that the predictions for 2050 are that the temperature will be increased by 2.5o c. He also stressed the need for the adoption of resistant varieties, traditional varieties, increasing soil fertility by adding organic manure, green manure, vermicompost, conservation of moisture by mulching, drip irrigation, Integrated Nutrient and Pest Management.
Chitradevi, Joint Director of Agriculture, Coimbatore highlighted the importance of Climate Change and the need for doubling the farm production & tripling farmers income. She requested the farmers to avail the different subsidy schemes of the State Department of Agriculture related to agricultural inputs, drip irrigation, national food security and millets production.
During the technical session, S.Geetha, Director, Centre for Plant Breeding & Genetics, TNAU, Coimbatore delivered special lecture on climate-resilient crop varieties released by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University followed by E.Somasundaram, Professor (Agronomy), TNAU, Coimbatore delivered a special lecture on climate-resilient technologies and agronomic practices necessary for agriculture and allied sectors. More than 100 Farmers and Scientists participated in this program.
