Covai’s admirable medical-academician passes away!

Dr.S.Ramalingam, the Dean of PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research passed away on July 30th (Friday).

He was one of the most important medical-academicians in Coimbatore, and he was certainly among the several dashing personalities who helped shape PSG IMSR to become such an elite medical college that it is today.

He did his MBBS from Coimbatore Medical College & Hospital and came out with flying colors in 1985, joined PSG IMSR as a tutor in the Department of Pharmacology in 1986 and continued till 1989.

After that he left for a brief period to do his higher studies at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. He came back in 1991 and served as Associate Professor in Pharmacology till 2000. He did his Post Doctoral Fellowship from the prestigious Stanford University, California, USA in 2001.

Following that he returned, joined PSG IMSR once again as a professor till 2004. After that he became its Principal, succeeding Dr.P.Rajanna. From 2013 till his last day, he remained PSG IMSR as its Dean.

Dr.J.S.Bhuvaneswaran, Director, PSG Super Speciality Hospital shared his thoughts about Dr.Ramalingam.

“He was well-read guy and an academically very strong person.  If you talk about his role in PSG IMSR’s development, I would say that it was so immense that it could be seen as PSG IMSR before and after Dr.Ramalingam. He brought such significant changes in the college”

“ His academic approach was well-planned. He instilled immaculate discipline and research culture, and paved way for academic and infrastructural development from his Day 1.”

“He was a very thorough gentleman, soft-spoken and well-read. His mastery of English and his love for Literature, especially English was phenomenal. We were together pursuing our higher studies at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. We both contested for the Best Presentation Award, and he got the first place. He was an exceptional orator, and he would beautifully quote eminent writers in his speech.”

“As an academician, he was very strict and expected all the students to be disciplined, and inspired them to be like that. At the same time, we know him to be a very kind, empathetic and humble human being.”

“He was a good friend, valuable colleague and like an elder brother to me. He wanted the institution to offer Ph.D programs, become an important hub for medical research, get high rankings on national level and be regarded as an institute of fame. His biggest dream for PSG IMSR was to see it become an elite Medical University.

One of Dr.Ramalingam’s Favorite lines:

Dr. Ramalingam would often share valuable lines from English poems. He shared this one from Tennyson’s Ulysses, and called it one of his favorites.

“We are not now that strength which in old days

Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;

One equal temper of heroic hearts,

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield”
