Covai loses a renowned Cardiac-surgeon

Dr.Sundar Ramanathan was one of the reputed cardiothoracic surgeons in Coimbatore, who served nearly two decades at the prestigious G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital. He passed away on 21.7.2021.

A son of the soil, Dr.Sundar pursued his school education at Kikani Matriculation School. He successfully completed his MBBS at Coimbatore Medical College & Hospital with flying colors.

He joined GKNMH as a medical officer in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery under Dr.Muralidharan. His time with him as a young doctor inspired him to become a cardiac surgeon.

To further enhance his acumen, he went on to pursue MS and MCH. He completed his FRCS in Cardiac Surgery in UK (one of the few early people to get this fellowship). Upon completion of his higher education, he returned to GKNMH in 2001, and since then he continued to offer his services till the day of his departure from this world.

Dr.P. Chandrasekar, Chairman, Department Cardiothoracic Surgery, GKNMH shared some thoughts about Dr.Sundar.

“Dr. Sundar was a meticulous surgeon, an excellent academician and was really a great asset to our Cardiothoracic Surgery Department. He was an amiable person with a positive attitude, very passionate in rendering medical service, stickler to principles, actively involved in teaching, and most of all he was known for his extreme sense of good humour and for his tremendous love for Tamil. I knew Sundar for more than 40 years. We studied in the same school and college. I would say that it was an absolute bliss to have heard Sundar speak and debate in Tamil. He was prolific at orations in school and collegiate days.”

He added that Dr.Sundar had served the Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons as an Executive Member for the last three years. “ He was liked by all, especially by his team and it was no doubt that he played an integral role as a senior cardiothoracic surgeon at GKNMH. It is indeed a great loss to lose such a valued colleague and a friend. His demise has left a huge void”.
